Painting is a popular and satisfying DIY job. If you’re painting a relatively small and simple space, then the work is not overly complex and you get to see dramatic results right away. With the right equipment rentals, you can start painting quickly and affordably. Although painting is DIY-friendly, there are some common mistakes that people make that could derail your work. Be sure to avoid these errors to make sure your painting project looks its best.
Mistake: Not Prepping the Space
The success of your painting job depends largely on the success of your preparation. Although you may be tempted to jump right into the painting portion of your work, it’s important to prepare your space for painting, so that you get the results you want. Clean and sand the area as needed, get rid of any peeling paint chips, and move or cover any furniture or carpet that could become stained. Tape off the edges of your space with painter’s tape, not masking tape, and make sure all of the bubbles are out of the tape by using a scraper to smooth the surface.
Mistake: Dipping the Brush Too Deep into the Paint
Any easy mistake for novice painters to make is dipping the brush or roller too far into the paint. The idea isn’t to plunge the brush to get as much paint on it as you can. Instead, dip the brush no more than one-third of the way into the paint. This will allow you to get the appropriate amount of paint without creating globs inside the bristles that could affect the smoothness of your finish.
Mistake: Not Allowing Coats to Dry
If you need to do more than one coat of paint, allow the first coat to dry before applying the second one. Painting a second coat too soon will cause imperfections in the finish that will be permanent once the paint dries.
