Many families are choosing to raise backyard chickens for fun, to teach their kids responsibility, and to enhance their sustainable lifestyle. Plus, the taste of a freshly laid egg is unlike anything you’ll find in the supermarket. It’s easier than you think to build your own backyard chicken coop. Before you rent the equipment you’ll need, figure out where the best location is. Ideally, your coop should be located close to an outdoor power source.
Free chicken coop plans are readily available online, or you can draft your own blueprints. The trick is to make sure your coop will be large enough to keep your flock happy and healthy. If your flock doesn’t have enough space, you might find yourself dealing with unhealthy, cannibalistic chickens. The general rule of thumb is to have at least three square feet of space per chicken, but more is always better. You’ll also need one nest box for every three chickens, and you’ll need an attached chicken run. You’ll need eight to 10 square feet of space in the outdoor run for each chicken. The outdoor run should be enclosed on all sides, including the top, with chicken wire mesh to protect your flock from predators.
There’s no need to purchase a bunch of power tools. Keep your costs low by renting the following tools.
- Auger (for digging post holes)
- Screw gun
- Roof nailer
- Circular saw
You’ll also need a level, tape measure, and saw horses. A carpenter’s pencil is handy for marking your cuts on the wood.
The specific type and amount of materials you’ll need vary, depending on your coop design. If you need assistance, you can bring your coop plans into a builder’s supply store. The sales clerk there should be able to figure out how much of the following materials you’ll need:
- Chicken wire
- 2.5” coated exterior deck screws
- Roof nails
- 2 X 4 framing lumber
Don’t forget that you’ll have to build a perch, where your chickens will sleep, and nesting boxes, where they’ll lay eggs. When you get the structure built, plant some chicken-friendly vegetation in the run . Your chickens will love snacking on any of the following:
