Build Your Own Concrete Countertop

Concrete countertops are highly sought-after for their beauty and durability, but they can be expensive to purchase. Fortunately, by renting the equipment you need to get the job done, you can build your own countertop and save a significant amount of money. Here is a look at the equipment rentals you will need and the process you should follow to build your concrete countertop.

Assemble Your Tools

It takes fewer tools to build a countertop than you may think, depending on what you already have in your arsenal. You will definitely need the following supplies:

  • Sawhorses
  • Table saw
  • Bolt cutters
  • Drill
  • Orbital sander
  • Concrete mixer
  • Chemical-resistant gloves
  • Concrete stamp

You may have some of these tools already, but many of them can also be rented, including drills, sanders, mixers, and saws. Be sure to assemble all of your tools before you start working, so that you don’t get to a critical part without the supplies to finish the job.

Create a Mold

Your mold will help to form the countertop. Start by determining the size your counter needs to be, and then use thick particleboard to build a mold, constructing the sides and then attaching them into a single piece. If you want a hole in your countertop, create an opening in the base of your mold, which will be the top of your counter. Caulk the seams of the mold with silicone bead. Next, use galvanized, structured wire to create a metal frame that fits tightly into your mold, but take it out until the concrete is poured.

Pour Your Counter

Prepare your ready-mix concrete according to the package instructions, and then pour it into your mold, pressing and smoothing as you work. After you pour about an inch, add your metal frame for support, and continue pouring until the mold is slightly overfilled. Smooth the surface and use an orbital sander on the sides of the mold to release air bubbles. Cover it with plastic and let it cure for at least a week. Remove the mold, sand the edges, and install your countertop.

Planning a Backyard Wedding Reception? Here's How to Get Your Yard Ready

It’s nice to have a wedding reception right in your backyard, and it can be a great way to save money while getting to celebrate your big day with all of your friends and family. Spruce up your landscaping, look for table and chair rentals, and try out your layout well in advance. If you’re planning a backyard wedding reception, keep reading.

Tidy Up the Landscaping

You want your yard to look its best at all times, but you’ll be more concerned with its upkeep than ever if you’re going to be hosting a wedding reception. It could be your own reception or you could be helping out a close friend or family member—either way, your backyard should look dazzling. You don’t have to go out and plant a garden or add a new tree to your backyard. Just make sure your usual landscaping design is looking its best. Mow the lawn, trim the hedges, and deal with any weak tree branches that could be problematic for the ceremony.

Rent Tables and Chairs

Here’s where a lot of people go wrong when planning a backyard wedding reception: not getting the right seating for their guests. Table and chair rentals make it easy to have a pop-up wedding reception, but you need to get the right amount. There should be at least one seat for every person involved in the event, and it helps to have backups just in case. Rent tables for eating and serving food, and make sure everyone has enough space.

Try Your Layout

You should have an idea of what your backyard will look like during the reception well before the day arrives. Try your layout in your yard ahead of time. Mark where every table and chair will be placed so you can tell where the aisles will be, and set up for a dress rehearsal when you have your materials.

A-1 Equipment Rental Center can help you get your yard in shape with garden equipment, lawn mower rentals, and table and chair rentals in Redwood City. Call us at (650) 369-2992 to see how we can help.

Proper Techniques for Using an Appliance Dolly

Dollies make it possible to move heavy items without hurting yourself, but you have to know how to use them. Watch this video to learn about the proper techniques for using an appliance dolly.

When you look at the back of the dolly, the handle should be to the right. Pull the belt through the small bar and the first post corner, then all the way around the object and back to the opposite post. Then, pull it through the post next to the handle and back through the previous post. Pull the belt tight and turn the handle, then do the same thing at the top. Finally, pull the bar and tilt the load so the back wheels disengage.

Dollies near San Jose make moving heavy objects a whole lot easier, and A-1 Equipment Rental Center can help you choose the right one for the task. If you need moving equipment, call (650) 369-2992 today.
